Чеснок — это многолетнее травянистое растение. Вид рода Лук семейства Амариллисовые (Amaryllidaceae) подсемейства Луковые (Allioideae), ранее помещался в самостоятельное ныне упразднённое семейство Луковые (Alliaceae).

Родиной является Средняя Азия. Окультуривание чеснока происходило в горных районах Таджикистана, Туркмении, Узбекистана, на севере Ирана, в Афганистане и Пакистане. А. И. Введенский предположил то, что чеснок произошёл от лука длинноостроконечного (Allium longicuspis) произрастающего на дне ущелий в горах Туркмении, на Тянь-Шане и Памиро-Алае. Позднейшие исследования подтвердили верность этого предположения и показали, что чеснок генетически неотличим от лука длинноостроконечного.
